The index is a parameter that serves to determine the fluctuations of a particular phenomenon for some time and in different places.

"The Consumer Price Index" is a famous example for everyone.

This index (CPI) measures the evolution of the average price level of goods and services consumed by households, weighted by their share of the average household consumption.

In summary: we speak of inflation if the value of money decreases, which means that prices rise and deflation when prices drop.
An index is a statistical measure calculated by combining the values of securities of many companies. The stock market is generally used to measure the performance of a stock exchange or market.

The indices can be classified in different ways, such as:

  • The “global” stock market index includes (large) companies without regard to where they are domiciled or traded.
    Example: S & P 100.
  • The "national" market index represents the performance of the stock market of a specific country. It reflects the investor’s feeling toward the state of the local economy.
    Example: FTSE 100 in Britain.
  • The stock market of specific sectors, such as the largest U.S. companies in the biotech industry, real estate investment companies.

  • Dow Jones (created by Charles Dow and Edward Jones in 1900): following the 30 largest companies in the United States.
  • Dax: includes 30 companies with the largest market capitalization in Germany (this country is considered as the largest economy in Europe).
  • Nikkei (Tokyo): includes 225 companies with the highest market value in Japan.
  • FTSE (Fundamental Theorem of Software Engineering): England.
  • CAC (Cotation Assistée en Continu): France.
  • SEHK (Stock Exchange Hong-Kong): Asia’s largest Stock exchange.
